Smart rings and wearables tested against a reference: Polar H10 chest strap, polysomnography in a sleep lab and StepWatch 5. Data and charts, no marketing.
💍 Smart Rings
Seven nights, eight smart rings and a chest strap as the referee. Five rings recorded my night heart rate reliably and earn a recommendation. Three think I'm running up the stairs in my sleep — I wouldn't buy those.
💍Oura Ring Gen 3 & 4 & 5
A ring, a strap and a watch, worn together for 637 nights. HRV and heart rate match almost perfectly. The morning scores? That is another story.
💍Oura Ring Gen 3 & 4 & 5
With the Ring 5, Oura started showing how much your blood pressure drops at night. I compared it with the Hilo BP monitor for four months: single nights don’t match – the long-term trend does.
💍Oura Ring Gen 3 & 4 & 5
I strapped an Oura Ring 5 and a chest strap to one ordinary day — sleep, six workouts, the lot — and pulled the raw data. Here's how a smart ring actually measures your heart rate, and exactly where it goes quiet.
steps accuracy
Three of the newest smart rings, a scientific ankle pedometer on my leg and 20 days of real-life walking. Which one gets closest to reality? And why do all three (SPOILER!) count fewer steps than you actually take?
💍Oura Ring Gen 3 & 4 & 5
The Oura Ring 5 is radically smaller and slimmer than the Gen 4. But does the miniaturization cost you anything in the data? I wore both generations on the same night to find out.
elonga
In this article, I compare optical heart rate measurement in screenless bands from Elonga, WHOOP, Polar, and Amazfit against a chest strap with ECG-level accuracy. Same exertion, same methodology, same conditions. Or are they? And is it even possible to simulate the same conditions?
stress
I arrived at the interview wearing my wearables – Garmin, Whoop, Oura, and the AI pendant Limitless. All detected stress, each differently. The highest peak? Garmin: 99/100 right in the middle of the talk. Which one told the truth? And what does the LLM say?
Whoop
Who wouldn’t want smart boxers that wash themselves when needed, cool you down in summer, and keep you warm in winter? Well, that’s not what we’re talking about today. Whoops.
🏆 Best smart ring
Which smart ring detects illness the best? During a week with the flu, I tracked how different rings (Oura, RingConn, Ultrahuman…) and other wearables (Whoop, Garmin Fenix 8, Apple Watch Ultra, Elonga) responded. Which devices gave an early warning — and which ones failed?
🏆 Best smart ring
Which smart ring tracks steps the most accurately? I spent a week using the StepWatch 5 ankle device as a reference to compare the step-tracking accuracy of the best smart rings and other popular wearables. How did favorites like Oura, Ultrahuman, RingConn, Whoop, and Garmin perform?
🏆 Best smart ring
Which smart ring measures sleep best? I spent a night in a sleep lab to compare the sleep tracking accuracy of the top models against the gold standard—polysomnography (PSG). How did Oura, Samsung, Ultrahuman, and others perform? The results might surprise you!
